The "Loner" Poem Assignment

Imagine you are the loner boy, write a poem to express how you might feel and what you might be thinking as the loner boy.

I leaned against the playground wall
Wary of them all
As they ran past me they paused
Paused to stare, to try to understand

But you see they can't understand
What I've been through
They have laughter and friends
Unlike me, no one to talk to

The children, they don't know
I was scared to try
One of them paused, then looked away
The rest had to follow, but why?

Angry, I am not
Confused, I am
I could not get
How the children act

Suddenly a spark of hope reignited
Maybe, I am not alone
There must be someone out there
Just as lonely as me

As I left this place
That wall
My heart lifted a little higher
Maybe then, I could start anew.

"The Loner" Assignment

What is my impression of "the Loner"?

"The Loner" is an anti-social boy. He finds it hard to mix with the children around him. As he "leans against the playground wall", he is wary of the children playing in front of him. He longs to play with them but "back against the wall he stays" as he is unsure of how to approach them. Thus, he finds comfort and security with the playground wall. The wall is his only "friend" and he is very dependent on it. Also, "his loneness is his shell and shield" shows that he uses his loneless as a form of protecting himself from the other children.

What is your impression of the other children?

The other children are very comfortable within their own social circles. They are each in their own "familiar clique". They do not understand "the Loner"."Nor we will yield" and do not want to provoke or approach him. They are fulfilled and happy, within themselves and does not want to trouble themselves with "the Loner". They find him to be a weird person who would rather enjoy the company of the playground wall than the company of real friends.

"The Dark Knight" Assignment

Do I Sympathize with the Joker?

No, I do not. The Joker has killed countless people mercilessly. Whether the people deserved to be killed is another question. Murder is murder, and the Joker has done too much of it. Some might argue that he does so because of his messed-up childhood. But, there must have been others out there with a much more painful childhood, and could still grow up to become anything other than a ruthless killer. From the movie itself, there were many characteristics of the Joker which allows many people to believe that the Joker is not a character to sympathize, but a character to despise.

What have I learnt from the lesson?

I have learnt many things from the movie. One of which is that we cannot judge a character immediately without further analyzing it. For example, the Batman, has evolved in our heads, from a pure, honest super hero to a hero who has darker motives and different, unknown intentions. The Joker on the other hand, to me, has remained the same as the evil villain who has dark, cunning plots. In a way, the Batman and the Joker has some similarities, after much observing and analyzing it. Both of them are so much alike, yet they are both so much different.
